Professor Shehu Usman Abdullahi was born on 2nd February, 1951 at Ikara, the headquarters of Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna State. He attended Ikara Primary School (1958-1960) and Soba Senior Primary School (1961-1963.
He attended Provincial Secondary School (now Alhudahuda College), Zaria for his Secondary School education (1964-68) and Government College (now Barewa College), Zaria for his Higher School Certificate studies (1969-70).
He obtained a Doctor Of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria (1971-76) and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the same field from University of Minnesota, USA (1979-82), specializing in Veterinary Urology.
He attended the Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru-Jos (1990)where he acquired the title of Member of the National Institute (mni).
He also holds certificates in University Administration, Computer Appreciation, and Arabic Language.
He joined the services of Ahmadu Bello University in 1977 and rose to the rank of Professor in 1989, a period of twelve years. He held the following positions at different times:
1). Director Veterinary Teaching Hospital, ABU, Zaria (1988-1992);
2). Deputy Vice-Chancellor, ABU, Zaria (1994-1995);
3). Academy Provost, Nigerian Defence Academy Kaduna (1996-2004); and
4). Vice-Chancellor, ABU, Zaria (2004-2009).
ProfesorAbdullahi served as Chairman/Member of several national and international committees. Currently, he is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of Kaduna State University.
Professor Abdullahi has over 100 scientific publications to his credit including in journals (national and international), textbooks, seminars and conferences.
He discovered a new treatment for an animal disease called Struvite Urolithiasis (Stone Disease) in 1982. The treatment was approved for use in animals by the American Food and Drug Administration in 1983 and has since then been adopted for human beings.
Professor Abdullahi has supervised several postgraduate students who graduated with PhDs and Masters degrees and is still teaching in ABU, Zaria.
Professor Abdullahi is a holder of a National Honour, Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR). He is married and has ten children.
Professor Abdullahi has been an ardent golfer since 1998 and was at different times a Member, Board of Trustees of Nigerian Defence Academy Golf Club, Kaduna Golf Club, and Zaria Golf Club. He is also involved in other community services.
